Manual Therapy and Massage Technique

Studies of massage (remedial, deep tissue, shiatsu) and manual therapies (mobilisation, manipulation, stretching) have found them to be beneficial for many problems including musculoskeletal issues, back and neck pain, joint problems, headaches, strains, and sprains. At the first appointment a detailed history and an assessment will ascertain which type or combination of therapies would be most beneficial to achieve a successful outcome.

Massage and manual therapy combinations are shown to:

• Help reduce stress and stress hormones
• Release muscle tightness and decrease muscle stiffness
• Increase flexibility and joint function
• Achieve faster recovery after workouts

Remedial massage

This is a targeted therapy focusing on the specific issue that needs rehabilitation, attention or treatment. It aims to treat muscles, connective and soft tissue that have become knotted, tense, immobile or injured. It is useful for a number of problems that involve or affect muscles tendons and bones. Having been shown to help chronic pain and injuries, it is normally performed over a number of treatments, reassessing the progress at each session.

Deep tissue massage

This massage is a holistic treatment working on the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It can provide relief from chronic muscle pain, loosen painful and tight muscles, release built up tension and toxins by improving blood flow; and identify trigger points and dysfunctional tissue structures.

Shiatsu Massage

Meaning finger pressure in Japanese and based on energy principles, this whole body treatment also uses pressure from palms, elbows and thumbs to stretch and manipulate points on the body along energy or meridian lines from head to toe. The aim is to improve body function, stimulate blood circulation and hormonal systems, release toxins and decrease stress and anxiety.

Hot Stone Massage

Dating back to ancient times this therapy uses heated volcanic basalt stones to stimulate muscles ligaments and tendons, the heat allowing deeper penetration into the muscle layers providing a more effective massage, allowing a greater relaxation and relief of stress and tension, improving blood circulation and lymph flow, whilst calming the nervous system.

It can be helpful for many musculoskeletal conditions and injuries acute and chronic , such as back, neck and joint pain and has been shown to be helpful in managing conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia for long term relief from chronic pain, also helpful for tension and anxiety, whilst promoting better sleep
